The Quantum Uncertainty of Love

Poetry of the Entanglement of Science, Philosophy, and Spirit

This extraordinary collection of poems was born from a lifelong fascination with man’s spiritual nature as well as with several areas of scientific inquiry that led to an awareness of the entanglements that exist among science, philosophy, and spirit. Poet Michael Baldwin dares to ask “Who are we?” and “What is our purpose?” and “What about God?” (Includes ten full-color illustrations by California artist Andrew Ostrovsky.)

Description

The poems in this collection are the result of a lifetime of reading the classics of spiritual, mystical, and philosophical literature, as well Mike’s studies of several areas of science as a layman. Although he considers his mind to be primarily scientific and skeptical, he has always been fascinated by the enigma of man’s spiritual nature, by our need for that ineffable something beyond ourselves that gives our lives greater meaning. He has never believed that science and spirit are obligatory antagonists. Indeed, his knowledge of physics, astronomy, and biology continually arouses his spiritual awe. Neuroscience tells us that about 95% of our cognition is subconscious. It is from that deep well of mental possibility that the poet’s muse operates, and from which spiritual experience emanates.

The 65 poems in this 118-page book are divided among seven sections that correspond with deep questions of human existence. Each poem features an epigraph from a philosopher or artist that was the impetus for the poem or provided some basic insight into it for Mike. While some of the poems are primarily scientific and others mainly metaphysical, most demonstrate how the elements of both intermingle and influence each other. Hence the subtitle of the book: Poetry of The Entanglement of Science, Philosophy, and Spirit.

The great writings of philosophy and ancient wisdom provide few concrete answers. Rather, they stimulate deeply important questions and provide clues to help us pursue answers for ourselves. That is what Mike has tried to do with the poetry of this collection. Mike hopes you will find these poems both thought provoking and spirit invoking for your own spiritual and intellectual journey.

  • Extraordinary Insights

"Baldwin tells the reader in his Introduction that he is a layman in the matters of science and philosophy, yet when you read his poems, you become instantly aware that they come from a highly knowledgeable, informed mind on most any subject. His poems bring extraordinary transformations and insights to the myriad of concerns of the human experience. Luminously written poems by one of the most interesting and intelligent poets I have read."

  • Astonishingly Graceful

"Elegant, astonishingly graceful poems about the ineffable inquiries of life -- the unresolved impulses and curiosities assailing us from all directions -- if we think -- if we care. Michael Baldwin has made powerful magic that feels deeply comforting through articulate and companionable consideration of the great mysteries."

-- Naomi Shihab Nye, prolific poet and novelist; recipient of the 1988 Academy of American Poets' Lavan Award

  • Cosmic Experience

"Michael Baldwin has tackled the Big Ones: time, love, fate, spirit, universe. He is unafraid to say he doesn't know, and in that courage, much is surely true of 'the journey we so dream-dread.' Let Baldwin's finely wrought poems take you to the edge of the galaxies and back home through time-space, to thoughtful wisdom and the humility of being human."
